Richard P. Hollingworth, Ph.D. ’48 began at Peddie in 1946. Originally from the Trenton area, Hollingsworth came to Peddie with an open mind and desire to try new things. He immediately bonded with Peddie faculty members Lloyd Ogden, Ozzie Rand ’40, Herb Mariboe and Lucian Waddell. Outside the classroom, Dick played tennis and squash, and led the Science Club, the Press Club and School YMCA. Richard went on to Dartmouth to major in chemistry and minor in geology. After he served in the U.S. Army, he earned his post-doctorate degree in geochemistry at Durham University in England. Thus began his 30-year career as a research analytical chemist and chemical process engineer. Still, Dick credited his Peddie teachers for his excellent education.
“As his wife was a high school teacher, Dick recognized the value of teachers throughout his life,” recalled niece Wendy Gibbons.
In 1999, Dick became a member of the Bell Society by naming Peddie in his revocable living trust. Upon his death in June 2009, Peddie received 30 percent of the widower’s estate, and the Richard P. Hollingworth ’48 Fund became one of 22 named endowments for faculty support. The uses include faculty salaries, sabbaticals, research and professional development.
